In no world did I ever think I’d be here but in no world did I ever think I’d revisit this kind of sadness. So somehow here we are, some five years later and still weeping inside.
Did you know that sourdough from San Francisco is leavened partly by a bacteria called Lactobacillus Sanfrancisensis? It’s native to the soil there, and does not do well elsewhere. But any kitchen can become an ecosystem if you bake a lot. Your kitchen might become a happy home to wild bacteria and vegan tip-toers and all your bread will taste better! And if I never moved here I might not have ever learned this and I might just be at my kitchen table picking at some wheat bread. And certainly if I never moved here I might not have ever been sitting at my kitchen table understanding that my words are valuable and so is my time and absolutely is my presence. Because here’s the thing: even a failed load is not wasted. Tomato gardeners compost with rotten tomatoes. Cheese makers wash their dairy floor with whey and absolutely no words are wasted: the words you can’t put in your book can wash the floor, live in the soil, lurk around in the air. They will make the next words better and if I never moved here I might not have ever learned this.
i’ll stop dressing in black when they invent a darker colour
finally something to match my soul
If you haven’t seen this, it’s actually so black that if they made clothing out of it, it would just appear as though there was a photoshopped hole where your clothing is.
